When I have to fly...........These are personal recommendations that have helped me - creator of Airfraid.

First of all make sure that all at home and work has been left in complete tidyness, physically and mentally!

1) Find a travel agent or .com booking centre that is sympathetic to your needs. www.flights-international.com operators have been trained to listen and answer, as well as they can, every question that you have. (Tel: 0800 0187050)

2) Use an airline that you feel confident about - and make sure that they know that you are a very nervous flyer

3) Ask the airline about the type of plane and how new is it. Ask about seat sizes - that helps calm the feeling of claustrophobia (read articles claustrophobia and clalustrophobia 2

4) When flying - ask to visit the cockpit (sadly, this may not be possible these days) meet the captain and crew and see that they are normal, responsible and experienced professionals, most with partners and families.

5) When you are in the cockpit or just on the plane - ask questions, no matter how silly you feel they may be!

6) Take plenty to do on your journey and do not forget to get up and exercise on those long flights - exercise information on the editorial pages, or you can order the 'Little Book of Healthy Flying' from www.amazon.co.uk

If your worries are health concerns, visit our editorial page and read 'Coping with the Fear of Flying' and also visit the website www.travelhealth.co.uk - this site has many helpful subjects and links.

There are other self-help routes that you can follow, i.e; meditation, self-healing and hypnosis. But these are very personal choices of help. If hypnosis is a route you would like to try, read our article on hypnosis in the editorial section or visit two registers of hypnotherapists at www.nrhp.co.uk and www.hypnotherpists-uk.co.uk for someone to contact in your area or visit our consultant psychologist page.....

Another nice calming idea is to purchase a lounge pass for the airports that you are visiting. This will truly make you feel truly calm and ready for the flight.

There is also the recommended shopping links on the right of this page for that extra bit of confidence

If this is just not enough, then there are many useful links on the 'Airfraid' website that can help you plan and enjoy a holiday without flying - visit our pages 'you will not fly'…… and 'no fly holidays'...also visit our very full links pages.

Editorial....Airline Reviews - Airlines - like most businesses - can differ considerably in the way they approach passenger service, comfort and wellbeing. As someone who, some years ago had a mild - but very real - fear of flying, I know what an incredible difference the attitude of airline staff can make.

John Barnard's Calming Music albums 'Beyond The Clouds' and 'Araluen' were played on all British Airways long haul flights worldwide for over two years. Chosen for their calming properties, these instrumental albums are comforting and relaxing, featuring soft piano, lush orchestral strings and haunting shakuhatsi flute. To listen to a sample of this music go to www.calmingmusic.com
